Horror Movies That Are Based On Real Life Incidents

Horror films are one of those movie genres which never fail to amaze us. For example, it includes an excellent plot and how the mystery unfolds, the jump scares, VFX, the sound of the footsteps, drops of water, the disappearing reflections in the mirror and so on.

We are left in awe as to who have the guts and mind to write such spine-chilling plots. These outstanding writers may not get their share of appreciation among fans but they are indeed outstanding. Their remarkable works go on to create history and that’s not it.

Whenever a writer comes up with a plot, he is always inspired by his surroundings or some real-life incidents which had marked his senses or he finds them interesting. Taking inspiration from these real-life incidents, they make a very powerful and terrifying script.

Here are some horror movies that are based on real life incidents-

1. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This movie was based on the real life incident of a German girl named Anneliese Michel. She endured 67 rites of exorcism before finally giving in. Later, she died because of pneumonia and malnourishment. The priests and her parents were charged with negligent homicide and the court sentenced them to 6 months imprisonment.

2. An American Haunting

This movie was based on the 1995 novel “The Bell Witch” by Brent Monahan. It was inspired by a Portuguese legend from Southern folklore centered on the 19th century Bell family of Adams, Tennessee. The family once said that the witch, Kate regularly haunts them and curses them. They admitted hearing loud scratching noises at their door made by a half dog half rabid creature.

3. The Conjuring

The Conjuring was a blockbuster across the globe due to its horrific plot and advanced VFX. It is an actual incident happened with the Perron family. the entire Perron family was cursed and experienced the worst days of their lives after they moved to a haunted house. They called paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine for their aid. Roger and Carolyn Perron and the five daughters who were allegedly terrified and even possessed by spirits. Upon investigation, they found out that the house is actually haunted by a witch named Bathsheba Sharon who used to live there in the 19th century.

4. Fire In The Sky

The real incident happened with an Arizona logger named Travis Walton. He claims that while working with the logging crew in the Apache-Sitegreaves National Forest in Arizona, he was abducted by aliens in the UFO. He further said that he was abducted on November 5 and was in a hospital like room there. There were three short bald creatures were observed and searched him and finally let him go after 5 days.

5. The Exorcist

There have been many deaths at the sets of Exorcist as the movie itself was said to be cursed by a ghost. William Peter Blatty, author of the book, also confirmed that he had read about this incident in a 1949 newspaper article where an unnamed boy was exorcized by officially sanctioned priests. According to the reports, he used to speak in different tongues, hovering inexplicable and moving things with his mind.

6. Jaws

A string of shark attacks in New Jersey coast line terrorized the people in 1996 which inspired the plot of Jaws.

7. The Hills Have Eyes

The story dates back to the 16 century Scotland. A man named Alexander Bean who was the leader of a group of 48 cave dwellers fed upon humans after killing them. The toll of dead people is over 1000 in 24 years.

8. Nightmare On The Elm Street

The writer of the movie, Wes Craven, was inspired to write the plot when he read about the detailed deaths of Cambodians in their sleep. One article caught his attention in which a man said that he is petrified of falling asleep. A few days later he died for unexplained reasons.
