BSF constables Rocky and Shubendu Rai were killed in an intense gun battle with two heavily armed LeT terrorists, who attacked the security convoy in Udhampur. The incident happened on 5th of august at around 07:30 am, when a man holding Kalashnikov stopped a BSF bus near Udhampur, on the Jammu-Srinagar NH-1A. Two jawans and a terrorist were killed in the attack and the other terrorist, Mohammad Naved Yakub was nabbed by the villagers.
These brave heart martyrs, who stood in the way of the terrorists, actually thwarted a massive attack. They risked their lives to save the lives of 40 odd people in the convoy. When the terrorists started hurling bullets on the convoy, Rocky was hit by few bullets in chest, but he did not lose his courage. The bullets punctured the convoy and it had come to a halt. When one terrorist, identified as Noman, tried entering the convoy with a grenade in his hand, the driver of the convoy Shubendu stopped him at the door .When Noman tried entering the bus from another door, Rocky unloaded a full magazine of bullets on Noman. Noman collapsed immediately but he had already lobbed a grenade near the door of the bus by then. The grenade blast injured 15 other BSF men. Both Shubendu and Rocky died of bullet injuries.
Rocky, BSF director general D K Pathak said had he not only eliminated the terrorist, but also saved the lives of 44 of his colleagues. Paying his tributes to the other martyr, IG Sharma said: “Constable Shubendu also tried to confront the terrorists…he could not survive the attack.”
Rocky’s father, Preetpal said “My village and the entire country feel proud that he has laid down his life for the nation’s sake”. Recognizing Rocky’s bravery Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal announced a government job for his family member and also announced an ex- gratia grant of RS. 20 lakh to the family. He also said” Haryana Government salutes the exemplary courage of its brave soldiers”. Their sacrifice will always be remembered. I salute the supreme sacrifice of BSF constables Shubendu Roy and Rocky who fought the terrorists till their last breath,” the Home Minister said. The government said in Parliament that it will recommend gallantry awards for the two martyred jawans of the BSF.
Speaking of the attack, the Border Security force said that it did not receive any intelligence report on the Udhampur attack. The BSF-director general said that there were no such attacks in that area in the last 20 years.
The bodies of the two martyrs, draped in Tricolor were then carried to flower-laden trucks for their final journey to their native places in Haryana and West Bengal respectively. Rocky was cremated with full state honors in his home state Haryana which was attended by many.
